Preview: Xbox Mods
written by Kevin Rose and Roman Loyola on Tuesday, March 11, 2003
Add new functionality to Microsoft's gaming console.
It's been awhile since our own Kevin Rose put together his G4/PC hybrid machine. Now he's got the itch again. This time, he's got his mind set on digging into the guts of our own Xbox game console.
On Monday, March 31, Kevin will mod the popular game console and give it new features. The other mods are coming soon.
Important note
Xbox mods are not supported by Microsoft and may be illegal under the DMCA. If you mod your Xbox, you are willingly voiding
the warranty and potentially breaking the law. If done improperly, modding could damage your Xbox.
What exactly is Kevin going to do with the Xbox? Kevin will tell you in his own words.
Kevin's Xbox mods
- Monday, March 31: Install an Xbox mod chip
Before you can truly unleash the power of the Xbox, you need to install a mod chip. Mod chips allow your Xbox to run
unsigned code, which makes it possible to run all types of third-party applications.
- Tuesday, April 1: EvolutionX
Now that the mod chip is installed, it's time to start making some changes. EvolutionX is the most popular Xbox dashboard
replacement. It turns your Xbox into a FTP/Telnet server.
- Wednesday, April 2: Increase storage
The Xbox's current hard drive just isn't going to cut it. We need space! Space to back up your games, MP3s, movies,
and more. Time to slap in a 120GB Maxtor hard drive.
- Thursday, April 3: Xbox Media Player
You have media, now let your Xbox play it. How about playing DivX, XVID, WMA, WMV, ASF, BivX, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, VOB,
AVI, ShoutCast, Icecast, and MP3s -- all on your Xbox? We'll show you how.
- Friday, April 4: Back up those games
You never know when you might accidentally scratch an Xbox game disc. It's time to back them up, put them away, and
run them from your hard drive.
